Toilet rules for cats

Guidebook

Visiting the litter box is usually child's play for our velvet paws. With a few simple rules, we can make their daily business even more pleasant and thus support them in using their toilet regularly and in a relaxed manner. Cats want to go to the toilet undisturbed and feel safe. The place of the toilet should therefore fulfil the following criteria:

  • Quiet location
  • Away from the feeding area
  • Easily accessible at all times

Cat litter tray with bonnet or with rim?

The bigger the litter tray, the better. A larger litter tray offers your cat more comfort and freedom of movement. A raised rim prevents cat litter from spilling. A bonnet also protects the environment from unpleasant odours, especially if it is equipped with a filter. However, some cats feel confined by a bonnet and prefer open toilets. If you choose a hooded model, make sure your cat can squat comfortably in it while keeping an eye on its surroundings.

Cleaning and number of litter boxes

Cats are clean animals that dislike using dirty toilets. Therefore, it is important to remove faeces and soiled litter 1-2 times a day. Depending on the type, you should completely change the cat litter once a week or once a month and then wipe out the toilet with a mild cleaning agent. Ideally, your pets should have one more toilet than there are cats in the household. This gives them enough choice and reduces the risk of conflict.

And what if something goes wrong?

Important: If something goes wrong, do not react with scolding or punishment. This only creates unnecessary stress and can lead to further uncleanliness. It is better to encourage desired behaviour. Put your cat on its toilet after meals and when it shows signs such as sniffing, scratching and squatting. After successful business, you can reinforce the learning effect with praise or a small reward.
